Choghadiya for your city
How Choghadiya works
The word Choghadiya comes from chau (four) and ghadiya (ghatika): each period is roughly four ghatikas, or about 96 minutes at the equinox. The sequence for each day starts with the Choghadiya ruled by the weekday's planet and then follows a fixed order. Daytime periods follow Udveg, Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog; night-time periods follow Shubh, Amrit, Char, Rog, Kaal, Labh, Udveg.
Choghadiya is especially popular in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra for fixing the start of business, purchases, journeys and pujas when a detailed muhurta is not available. For major ceremonies such as marriage or griha pravesha, a full muhurta that considers tithi, nakshatra and lagna is preferred.
Frequently asked questions
What is Choghadiya?
Choghadiya is a traditional Vedic time-keeping system that divides the day (sunrise to sunset) and the night (sunset to next sunrise) into eight parts each. Every part is named after one of seven qualities — Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Udveg, Rog and Kaal — and is used to pick a favourable time to begin an activity.
Which Choghadiya is good?
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are considered auspicious. Char is neutral and is traditionally preferred for travel. Udveg, Rog and Kaal are considered inauspicious for starting new work.
How long is one Choghadiya?
Each Choghadiya is one-eighth of the daytime or night-time, so its length changes with the season. Near the equinoxes it is about 90 minutes; in summer daytime Choghadiyas are longer and night ones shorter.
Why is Choghadiya different for my city?
Choghadiya is counted from local sunrise and sunset, which vary with latitude and longitude. Use the city links on this page to get timings for your location.
