Significations (karakatva)

Saturn (Shani or Manda, 'the slow one') signifies time, longevity, discipline, hard work, delay, sorrow, servants and labourers, old age and renunciation. It is the karaka of the eighth house (longevity) and the twelfth (loss and liberation), and also of the tenth house of work and duty. It is a neuter, airy, tamasic graha and the most feared natural malefic, but it is also regarded as a just teacher who rewards patient effort. Saturn gains directional strength in the seventh house. Its seven-and-a-half-year transit over the twelfth, first and second signs from the natal Moon is the well-known Sade Sati, and its transit of the fourth and eighth signs from the Moon is called Ardhashtama and Ashtama Shani.

Astronomy of Saturn

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest, about 116,460 km in diameter, famous for its bright ring system made of ice and rock particles. It is the most distant planet easily visible to the naked eye and was the outermost planet known to ancient astronomers. It orbits the Sun in about 29.46 years, so it spends about two and a half years in each sign, and three consecutive signs take about seven and a half years, the length of Sade Sati. Saturn is retrograde for about four and a half months each year. Its slow, steady motion is the reason for its Sanskrit name Shanaishchara, 'the slow-moving one'.

Mythology

Shani is the son of Surya and Chhaya, the shadow-wife of the Sun. Because Surya doubted his parentage, Shani is said to be at odds with his father. One story says that his gaze, when he looked at the infant Ganesha, caused Ganesha's head to be severed; another tells of the trials he inflicted on King Vikramaditya. He is depicted as dark-complexioned, carrying a bow or sword, riding a crow or vulture. Hanuman is believed to have rescued Shani from Ravana, and in gratitude Shani promised not to trouble devotees of Hanuman. Saturday (Shanivara) is named after him, and Shani Shingnapur in Maharashtra is a famous shrine.

Nakshatras ruled by Saturn

A person born with the Moon in one of these nakshatras begins life in the Saturn mahadasha of 19 years (the balance depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra).

Beeja mantra of Saturn

ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनये नमः

Om Prām Prīm Praum Saḥ Śanaye Namaḥ

The beeja (seed) mantra is traditionally chanted on the graha's weekday, often in multiples of 108. Traditional texts prescribe a total count (japa sankhya) for full propitiation; practices vary between lineages, and guidance from a teacher is customary.
