Puṣya means 'nourisher' or 'that which nourishes', from puṣ, 'to nourish, thrive'. It is also known as Tiṣya ('auspicious') and Sidhya ('prosperous').
About Pushya
Pushya is the eighth nakshatra, spanning Karka 3°20′ to 16°40′ in Cancer. It corresponds to stars in the constellation Cancer, especially Delta Cancri (Asellus Australis). Saturn is its Vimshottari lord, and the Moon rules the sign, while Jupiter is exalted at Cancer 5°, within this nakshatra. Many astrologers regard Pushya as the most auspicious of all nakshatras.
Pushya is a kshipra (swift) nakshatra and is widely used for buying gold, starting a business, beginning studies and initiating spiritual practice. When it falls on a Thursday (Guru Pushya) or Sunday (Ravi Pushya) it is considered a special yoga. Pushya Nakshatra before Diwali is popular for purchases in North India. An exception is marriage: by tradition Pushya is not used for weddings, because of a legend in which Brahma was cursed after becoming infatuated on this star.
Pushya natives are described as calm, learned, virtuous, wealthy and devoted to religion and family. They are said to be protective and caring, ready to serve others and respected in their community. Conservatism and an excessive sense of duty are mentioned as possible weaknesses. Teaching, counselling, religious work, dairy, food and public service are traditionally linked with this star.
These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.
Deity and mythology
The deity is Brihaspati, the guru of the gods and lord of sacred speech and prayer. Brihaspati performs the rituals of the devas and guides them with wisdom; he is also identified with the planet Jupiter. His association with the priestly role makes Pushya favourable for learning, worship and every kind of auspicious initiation.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Pushya considered the best nakshatra?
Pushya is presided over by Brihaspati, lies in the sign of Jupiter's exaltation, and is classed as a swift, nourishing star. Traditional texts call it the most auspicious nakshatra for nearly all beginnings except marriage.
What is Guru Pushya yoga?
Guru Pushya yoga occurs when the Moon is in Pushya on a Thursday. It is considered especially favourable for buying gold, starting studies and new ventures. Ravi Pushya on a Sunday is similarly valued.
Why is Pushya not used for marriage?
By tradition, Brahma is said to have been cursed for losing control on Pushya nakshatra, so the star is excluded from marriage muhurtas even though it is excellent for other undertakings.
