Maghā means 'the mighty' or 'the bountiful', from magha, 'gift, wealth, power'. It conveys royalty, inheritance and greatness.
About Magha
Magha is the tenth nakshatra, spanning Simha 0°00′ to 13°20′ at the beginning of Leo. Its chief star is Regulus (Alpha Leonis), the 'little king', which lies almost exactly on the ecliptic. Ketu is its Vimshottari lord and the Sun rules Leo, giving the star a regal yet otherworldly quality. Its first pada begins at a water-fire junction and is gandanta.
Magha is classed as an ugra (fierce) nakshatra in muhurta, yet it is also one of the eleven nakshatras traditionally accepted for marriage. It is particularly associated with the pitrs (ancestors); Magha Shraddha during Pitru Paksha is considered very meritorious. The lunar month Magha takes its name from this nakshatra because the full moon of that month falls in or near it.
Magha natives are traditionally described as wealthy, devoted to ancestors and elders, proud, ambitious and fond of honour and ceremony. They are said to have a sense of lineage and tradition and to enjoy authority. Leadership, government, history, archaeology and family businesses are commonly linked with this star. Arrogance and a desire for status are mentioned as weaknesses.
These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.
Deity and mythology
The deities are the Pitrs, the forefathers who dwell in the world of the ancestors. Vedic ritual offers them pindas (rice balls) and water, and they in turn bless the lineage with prosperity and offspring. The throne symbol reflects the authority inherited from ancestors and the duty to honour that legacy.
