Ashwini Nakshatra — Meaning, Deity, Traits & Padas

Aśvinī · అశ్విని · अश्विनी

Mesha 0°00′ – 13°20′

Aśvinī derives from aśva, 'horse', and means 'she who possesses horses' or 'born of a mare'. The name links the asterism to the Ashvini Kumaras, the twin horsemen of the Rigveda, and to the idea of speed and fresh beginnings.

About Ashwini

Ashwini is the first of the 27 nakshatras and opens the sidereal zodiac at 0° Mesha (Aries). It corresponds to the bright stars Beta and Gamma Arietis (Sheratan and Mesarthim) at the head of the constellation Aries. Because the zodiac begins here, Ashwini is associated with origins, initiative and the first impulse of any undertaking. Its lord in the Vimshottari dasha system is Ketu, so a person born with the Moon in Ashwini begins life in a Ketu mahadasha.

Ashwini is one of the gandanta (junction) nakshatras, sitting just after the water-fire boundary between Revati and Ashwini; births in its first pada are traditionally marked for a simple shanti ritual. In muhurta, Ashwini is classed as kshipra or laghu, a 'swift and light' star that is considered well suited to activities that should begin quickly and finish smoothly, such as starting medicine, short journeys and learning.

Traditional characteristics

Traditional texts such as the Brihat Samhita describe Ashwini natives as handsome, well dressed, intelligent, popular and fond of ornaments. Later commentators add a love of speed and independence, a readiness to help others in emergencies, and a restless energy that prefers starting things to finishing them. Healing, sport, transport and first-response professions are often associated with this star in modern astrological writing. As with all such descriptions, these are traditional associations rather than observed facts.

These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.

Deity and mythology

The presiding deities are the Ashvini Kumaras, Nasatya and Dasra, celestial physicians who ride a golden chariot ahead of the dawn. The Rigveda praises them for restoring youth to the sage Chyavana, rescuing Bhujyu from the sea and giving sight to the blind. In the Mahabharata they are the fathers of Nakula and Sahadeva. Their healing and rescuing role underlies Ashwini's reputation as the star of medicine and quick relief.

The four padas of Ashwini

Each pada spans 3°20′ and corresponds to one navamsa (D9) sign. Ashwini holds padas 1 to 4 of the 108 in the zodiac.

  1. Pada 1: Mesha (Aries) navamsa — Mesha 0°00′ – 3°20′; navamsa lord Mars, emphasising initiative, courage and a pioneering, self-starting drive. Name syllable: Chu. This pada is vargottama (rashi and navamsa coincide), traditionally considered a strengthening placement.
  2. Pada 2: Vrishabha (Taurus) navamsa — Mesha 3°20′ – 6°40′; navamsa lord Venus, emphasising steadiness, comfort, material security and an eye for beauty. Name syllable: Che.
  3. Pada 3: Mithuna (Gemini) navamsa — Mesha 6°40′ – 10°00′; navamsa lord Mercury, emphasising curiosity, communication, adaptability and quick learning. Name syllable: Cho.
  4. Pada 4: Karka (Cancer) navamsa — Mesha 10°00′ – 13°20′; navamsa lord the Moon, emphasising nurturing, emotional sensitivity and attachment to home and family. Name syllable: La.
