Dhaniṣṭhā means 'the wealthiest' or 'most famous', from dhana, 'wealth'. It is also called Śraviṣṭhā, 'most heard' or 'most famous'.
About Dhanishtha
Dhanishtha is the twenty-third nakshatra, spanning Makara 23°20′ to Kumbha 6°40′, with two padas in Capricorn and two in Aquarius. Its stars form the small diamond-shaped constellation Delphinus. Mars is its Vimshottari lord and Saturn rules both its signs. In the Vedanga Jyotisha, the winter solstice was placed at the beginning of Shravishtha, an important clue for dating that text.
Dhanishtha is a chara (movable) nakshatra, favourable for travel, buying vehicles, music and celebrations. Its second half begins the Panchaka period (the Moon's transit from Dhanishtha's second half through Revati), during which certain activities such as roofing or southward travel are traditionally avoided.
Dhanishtha natives are described as wealthy, generous, courageous, musical and fond of fame. They are said to have a strong sense of rhythm and timing, to enjoy group activities and to prosper through their own efforts. Restlessness in relationships is noted as a weakness. Music, sport, property and finance are often associated with this star.
These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.
Deity and mythology
The presiding deities are the eight Vasus, elemental gods of earth, water, fire, wind, sky, Sun, Moon and stars. In the Mahabharata the Vasus were cursed to be born as humans; seven were released at birth by the Ganga, while the eighth lived as Bhishma. Their association with abundance and the elements gives Dhanishtha its wealthy, rhythmic quality.
