About Chitra
Chitra is the fourteenth nakshatra, spanning Kanya 23°20′ to Tula 6°40′, with its first two padas in Virgo and the last two in Libra. Its star is Spica (Alpha Virginis), one of the brightest stars in the sky. Spica is so important that the widely used Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa defines the sidereal zodiac by placing Spica at exactly 180°, opposite 0° Aries. Mars is the Vimshottari lord of Chitra.
Chitra is a mridu (soft) nakshatra, considered favourable for wearing new clothes and ornaments, music, art, friendship and house-warming. The lunar month Chaitra, which begins the year in many Hindu calendars, is named after Chitra because the full moon of that month occurs in or near this nakshatra.
Chitra natives are described as attractive, well dressed, fond of ornaments and colour, artistic and intelligent. They are said to have a flair for design, architecture and making beautiful things, and to enjoy being admired. Pride and a taste for display are noted as weaknesses. Architecture, jewellery, fashion, photography and engineering are commonly associated with this star.
These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.
Deity and mythology
The presiding deity is Tvashtr (Vishvakarma in later tradition), the divine craftsman who fashioned Indra's thunderbolt and the cups of the gods. He is the shaper of forms in the womb and the architect of the universe. His creative mastery gives Chitra its association with design, construction and the arts.
