Krittika Nakshatra — Meaning, Deity, Traits & Padas

Kṛttikā · కృత్తిక · कृत्तिका

Mesha 26°40′ – Vrishabha 10°00′

Kṛttikā comes from the root kṛt, 'to cut'. The name evokes a blade or razor and, by extension, the cutting heat of fire. It is also the plural name of the six nurses of Kartikeya, who takes his name Kārttikeya from them.

About Krittika

Krittika is the third nakshatra, beginning at Mesha 26°40′ and ending at Vrishabha 10°00′, so only its first pada lies in Aries and the remaining three fall in Taurus. It corresponds to the Pleiades star cluster (M45). In Vedic literature such as the Taittiriya Samhita and the Shatapatha Brahmana, the list of nakshatras actually begins with Krittika, reflecting an era when the vernal equinox lay near the Pleiades.

The Sun is the Vimshottari lord of Krittika, and Agni is its deity, giving the nakshatra a strongly fiery and purifying character. In muhurta it is a mishra or sadharana (mixed) star, considered good for work involving fire, heat and refining, such as cooking, metal-working and certain rituals, but less suited to gentle ceremonies. The Sun's ingress into Krittika in May is traditionally the start of the hottest period of the year (Agni Nakshatram or Kathiri in South India).

Traditional characteristics

Natives of Krittika are described as sharp-minded, proud, ambitious and outspoken, with a strong sense of honour and a dislike of falsehood. They are said to be good at cutting through confusion, but may also be critical or quick-tempered. Traditional sources link them with leadership, cooking and nourishment, while modern writers add professions that require precision, such as surgery, editing and engineering.

These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.

Deity and mythology

Agni, the sacrificial fire and messenger between humans and gods, presides over Krittika. In the Puranas the six Krittikas nursed the infant Skanda (Kartikeya), son of Shiva, born from Shiva's fiery seed carried by Agni into the Ganga; he grew six faces to be fed by all of them. The Krittikas are also identified with the wives of six of the Saptarishi.
