Jyeṣṭhā means 'the eldest' or 'the senior-most', implying seniority, authority and protectiveness.
About Jyeshtha
Jyeshtha is the eighteenth nakshatra, spanning Vrishchika 16°40′ to 30°00′ in Scorpio. Its principal star is Antares (Alpha Scorpii), the red supergiant heart of the scorpion. Mercury is its Vimshottari lord and Mars rules the sign. As it ends at the Scorpio-Sagittarius junction, its last pada is gandanta and a gandamula shanti is traditionally performed for births there.
Jyeshtha is a tikshna (sharp) nakshatra, avoided for marriage and auspicious beginnings but considered suitable for decisive actions, overcoming enemies and protective measures. The lunar month Jyeshtha takes its name from it. Jyeshtha is also the name of the goddess Alakshmi, the elder sister of Lakshmi, in some traditions.
Jyeshtha natives are described as protective, responsible, courageous and respected, often taking on the role of the eldest in the family. They are said to be clever, resourceful and capable of handling crises, but may be secretive, irritable or proud. Leadership, management, defence, policing and occult studies are often linked with this star.
These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.
Deity and mythology
The deity is Indra, king of the gods, who slew the serpent Vritra and released the waters. Indra won his position by courage and must constantly defend it, and his story includes both heroic victories and moral failings. His role as chief and protector gives Jyeshtha its themes of seniority and responsibility.
