Ārdrā means 'moist' or 'green, fresh', from ārdra, 'wet'. It refers to the moisture of tears and storm clouds, and to the renewal that follows a storm.
About Ardra
Ardra is the sixth nakshatra, spanning Mithuna 6°40′ to 20°00′ entirely within Gemini. It is identified with the bright red supergiant Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis) on Orion's shoulder. Rahu is its Vimshottari lord and Mercury the lord of its sign, a pairing associated in astrology with intense intellectual energy and sudden changes.
In muhurta Ardra is classed as tikshna or daruna (sharp), and it is generally avoided for auspicious ceremonies. The Sun's entry into Ardra around late June traditionally marks the onset of the monsoon in India, and in Tamil Nadu the full-moon day in Ardra during Margazhi is celebrated as Arudra Darshanam, honouring Shiva as Nataraja. The nakshatra is associated with storms that clear the air and with the cleansing power of grief.
Traditional texts describe Ardra natives as clever but sometimes proud, ungrateful or harsh in speech, with a tendency towards mischief. Later writers present a more balanced picture: inquisitive, analytical and passionate, with an ability to work through upheaval and emerge renewed. Research, technology, medicine and work involving chemicals or electricity are often associated with this star.
These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.
Deity and mythology
Ardra is presided over by Rudra, the howling storm god of the Rigveda and an early form of Shiva. Rudra is both fearsome and healing: he brings destructive storms and also carries medicines. The Shatarudriya hymn of the Yajurveda praises him in both aspects. His tears, by one etymology, give Ardra its 'moist' name and its association with sorrow that leads to transformation.
