Abhijit means 'the victorious' or 'all-conquering', from abhi, 'towards', and ji, 'to win'. It is the star of victory.
About Abhijit
Abhijit is the 28th nakshatra, a special asterism that sits between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana. It is formed from the last pada of Uttara Ashadha (Makara 6°40′ to 10°00′) and the first fifteenth of Shravana (Makara 10°00′ to about 10°53′), a span of about 4°13′. Its star is Vega (Alpha Lyrae), one of the brightest stars in the sky, which lies far north of the ecliptic. Abhijit is listed in the Atharvaveda and early Brahmanas, but the later 27-fold scheme of equal 13°20′ divisions omits it.
Abhijit is not used in the Vimshottari dasha system or in horoscope matching; it is used mainly in muhurta, in schemes such as the 28-nakshatra Sarvatobhadra chakra. It is considered one of the most auspicious stars for victorious undertakings. Abhijit Nakshatra should not be confused with Abhijit Muhurta, the auspicious period around local midday (the eighth of fifteen daytime muhurtas) that is used daily to overcome flaws in a muhurta.

Traditional characteristics
Since Abhijit is not used for natal Moon placements in most systems, traditional texts give few personality descriptions. Where it is considered, natives are said to be victorious, learned, of pleasing appearance and respected. Its association with Brahma suggests creativity and leadership.
These descriptions reflect traditional beliefs recorded in Jyotisha literature. Astrologers read the birth nakshatra together with the whole horoscope, and these attributes are not scientific findings.
Deity and mythology
The deity is Brahma, the creator. In the Mahabharata (Vana Parva), Indra tells how Abhijit, younger sister of Rohini, went to the forest to perform austerities, leaving her place empty; Krittika then took the first position. This story is often linked to astronomical changes such as precession and to Vega's position near the north celestial pole in the distant past.
The four padas of Abhijit
Each pada spans 3°20′ and corresponds to one navamsa (D9) sign.
For Abhijit, the quarters are used mainly for naming and muhurta.
Pada 1: Makara (Capricorn) navamsa — Makara 6°40′ to about 7°43′; this stretch is the fourth pada of Uttara Ashadha, whose navamsa is Makara. Name syllable: Ju.
Pada 2: Makara (Capricorn) navamsa — Makara 7°43′ to 8°47′; still within Uttara Ashadha's fourth pada. Abhijit's quarters are a convenience used for naming and muhurta, not a separate navamsa division. Name syllable: Je.
Pada 3: Makara (Capricorn) navamsa — Makara 8°47′ to 9°50′; the last portion lying wholly inside Uttara Ashadha. Name syllable: Jo.
Pada 4: Makara (Capricorn) navamsa, passing into Mesha (Aries) navamsa — Makara 9°50′ to 10°53′; from 10°00′ the zodiac enters Shravana pada 1, whose navamsa is Mesha. Name syllable: Gha.
